  Frequently Asked Questions

Where will Pine Woods be located?
Pine Woods will be located in the beautiful rolling hills of Southeast Georgia, about an hour west of Savannah and only a three hour drive from Atlanta.

How many students will Pine Woods Retreat accept?
There will be 48 students in residence at Pine Woods Retreat. With an average stay of 6 months, about 100 people a year will benefit from the Recovery Program. The Alumni Program will grow over time as more students graduate. The Educational Program will serve all of Southeast Georgia and beyond. Long term plans call for building transitional living apartments on the site, and potentially a continuing care retirement community for alumni. Both of these programs will increase the number of people directly served by Pine Woods.

Who will be accepted as a student at Pine Woods Retreat?
The Recovery Program is designed for adults (age 18 and older) who are
Learning to Live with serious mental illness. Serious mental illness includes the schizophrenia spectrum disorders, the major depressive disorders (such as major depression and bipolar disorder). Applicants must be motivated toward rehabilitation and not currently dangerous to themselves or to others. If they also have a substance abuse problem (as many do), they must agree to participate in substance abuse therapy and to remain free of substance abuse while in the program.

How much will it cost to go to Pine Woods Retreat?
The current projections are $200 per day. This does not include some professional fees, medications or personal items.

Who will pay for treatment at Pine Woods Retreat?
Pine Woods Retreat will be structured to comply with billing requirements for insurance, public mental health agencies, Medicare and Medicaid programs. The benefits payable under these programs change. Each applicant will be evaluated to determine how much, if any, of the student’s expenses will be covered by a third party payor. Some scholarship assistance will be available.

When will Pine Woods open?
Pine Woods can open one year after groundbreaking. The date of groundbreaking will depend entirely upon the success of the fundraising campaign. It is too early to predict that date.
