Recovery
Recovery - a concept once unimaginable for people with serious
mental illness, is taking place every day at organizations
addressing the needs of the whole person – not just their
diagnoses. Examples of these organizations and links to their
websites are on our links page. Many of the existing
organizations have generously shared their experiences with Pine
Woods to help us build an effective Recovery Program for adults
who are Learning to Live with serious mental illness.
The Recovery Program will be conducted on a
working farm where students, teachers and professional staff
work together and use everyday experiences, as well as
medication management and many forms of therapy, to help
students achieve their highest potential for independent living.
Based on the success of existing programs, most students will
achieve this goal in approximately six months.
Types of therapy planned for Pine Woods
include:
- Medication management from an
employed Medical Director working in consultation
with faculty at Emory Medical School via a
telemedicine program.
-
Cognitive behavioral therapy,
neurocognitive enhancement therapy and other
effective forms of group, individual and
computer-based psychotherapy.
- Enrollment in the local technical
college to receive training certificates for all
skills learned.
- Work therapy at farm chores to
learn the life skills necessary for daily living.
- Educational assistance and job
training to prepare students for the workforce with
a special emphasis on computer training.
- Occupational, Physical and
Recreational therapy including art, music, equine
and pet therapy.

Alumni
To help alumni stay well after they return to their home
communities, the Alumni Program will assist in locating housing,
offer job placement and counseling, case management services,
psychotherapy through on-line programs and peer-to-peer support
through on-line chat rooms with other alumni. An annual
Homecoming Weekend will give alumni the opportunity to maintain
ties with Pine Woods' staff, other alumni and students.
Education
At Pine Woods, education is not just for students. Their
families will have the opportunity to learn about mental
illnesses and how they can promote independent living and self
respect. Pine Woods will offer accredited continuing educational
programs for primary care physicians, who treat most of the
mentally ill in rural areas, and for mental health care
providers. Workshops for school counselors, college personnel
and employers will be aimed at identifying mental illness early
and assisting patients and families as they seek help.
